Following up on the previous news that the current board of the financially troubled South Street Seaport Museum is being replaced, that the Attorney General has barred the removal of the museum’s historic ships from New York harbor and that new funding is being arranged, the Save our Seaport grassroots organization is sponsoring a “Rally to Save our Seaport” on Sunday, May 22, at 2PM, on South Street at Pier 16 just below the Peking‘s bowsprit. It will be a great opportunity for friends, supporters and volunteers to show their enthusiasm for the Seaport and its long term survival and future growth.
I loved visiting the Peking and watching that film of rounding Cape Horn. I totally support keeping it in good shape.
In fact the entire area. What’s the point of filling the islands with expensive condos if you lose the historical character of the neighborhoods.
The Museum has more treasures than the ship on the East River. It has one of the largest collections of ocean liner memorabilia and models than any museum or private collection in the world. In the early 70’s the ships wheel from the liner Normandie was presented to the museum. It has the Cunard Office 22 foot model of the Queen Mary. It also includes the Der Scutt Ocean Liner Model Collection and the entire contents of the now defunct Ocean Liner Museum. I really do not want to see these items auctioned off and lost to history. I wish there was some way this collection can be preserved.
