This is one of those great “only in New York” events. Next Thursday, PortSide NewYork and the historic tanker Mary A. Whalen are hosting the NYC premier of the Norwegian bluegrass band, the Paradise Mountain Boys, as well as a multimedia presentation of Norwegian WaterStories.
The evening will kick off with Lars Nilsen of the Norwegian Immigrant Association, Victor Samuelsen of the Norwegian Seaman’s Church, and John Weaver of PortSide NewYork spinning tales of Norwegian sailors rowing across the Atlantic in 1896, of stranded Norwegian seaman in 1920s Red Hook shanty town, and of the Norwegians on the tanker Mary A. Whale, in a multimedia presentation of vintage film and photos.
The second act will be the NYC premier of the Paradise Mountain Boys, bringing the down-home acoustic music of the Appalachians to New York by way of Hadeland, Norway.
The event is on Thursday, September 24, 2015 from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM at Atelier Roquette, 63 Commerce Street, Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY 11231. Tickets are $15 and are on sale here.
Sailed in the 70s with an old Norwegian bousun who lived in South Africa. Told me his son was coming to the states for a visit. He sailed single handed from there to NYC in a 35 footer. True story.
