In the Belly of the Beast – A look inside the SS United States

Now that the SS United States Conservancy has acquired the S.S. United States, the next question is – what they are going to do with her?   Her interior was gutted in 1994 to remove considerable quantities of asbestos.   Thanks to Alaric Bond for pointing out the photographs.

  1. The amount of work necessary to put this vessel into a useful purpose is enormous. Since she will never achieve a seagoing role again the ‘Conservancy’ must have a clear usage to aim for. In this current economy it is really hard to see what she could be used for.

    Good Watch.

  2. I agree. According to the news reports they have enough money to maintain the ship for about 20 months. Their options seem to be limited to a floating hotel or convention center and as you point out that could be a difficult deal to make in the current economy.

  3. As a 50 year transportation preservanist and historian, who saw the SS United States way back then, I was intrigued in seeing it saved. I own a production company that produces both name stars and the World’s Best Tribute entertainer concerts; and two days ago, I offered to hold fundraising concerts at/on the ship, to help keep the project moving ahead. As well, I would gladly consider taking on the projet of restoring the First Class Theatre (with concert profits); lease and keep entertainment in it for many years to come. Don Kirk – owner Don L. Kirk Productions. I also produce festivals; and if the conservatory will go along with me, I’ll hold festival fundraisers as well.
