Update: MOL Comfort – Salvage Tugs Arriving Today & the Crazy Conspiracy Theories

MOL_COMFORTMitsui O.S.K. Line has announced that “one patrol boat and three tugboats are heading to the site, and all of them are expected to arrive within June 24.”  The fore and aft sections of the ship’s hull are drifting near 15”12N 66’53”E and 13’38”N 64’10”E respectively in an east-northeast direction.

Meanwhile the right-wing blogosphere has been going crazy (crazier?) having picked up a post from a Russian blog  claiming that the MOL Comfort was carrying “4,500 containers of arms and ammunition for the Syrian rebels.”   The report allegedly originated with the Syrian newspaper Sham Life.  There is, of course, zero evidence to support the claim but then there rarely is in these sorts of conspiracy theories.

  1. Well, of course its a crzay theory of 4500 contains arms and weapons (since many civil container receiver are openly speaking about there container on board, only one company (forwarder) in germany has about 50 containers from Vietnam on board, but why not a few hundret of very heavvy weapon container? The next harbour was in saudi arabia, well it is speculation until now or until more proof is provided.

  2. Obviously, the fact that the initial report claims that there was a shipful of arms is completely nuts. One of the early claims the ship was loaded with arms put the ship in Pacific when it broke in half. Obviously, one does not need to worry about facts if spreading conspiracy theories.

Until there is the tiniest bit of evidence that there are arms aboard the ship, it strikes me as irresponsible to claim that there are. Given all the US military installations in the region, loading containers with heavy weapons and shipping them on a commercial liner seems like the most unlikely means of getting weapons to Syria.
