The MV Asphalt Venture was hijacked by Somali pirates on September 28, 2010. After negotiating and being paid a multi-million dollar ransom, the pirates released the ship and part of the crew yesterday, but continued to hold seven Indian seafarers hostage, reportedly in retaliation for the arrest of Somali pirates by the Indian Navy in recent weeks. ‘It is a major shift in the pirate-hostage equation which will need to be considered and addressed by the international community,’ said general secretary Abdulgani Y. Serang of the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI).
It’s a shame that innocent crew members on Asphalt Venture who just happen to be Indian nationals are being punished for their government’s resolve and efficiency. This is the downside for India now that she has proudly joined the US at the top of the pirates’ “Least Favored” list. Now India’s shipowners, like those few remaining US-flag ones, also have to worry if pirates will even accept ransom from them.
Those pirates are heartless to hijack MV asphalt Venture in which innocent crews are affected by these actions. Ransom is not enough against this devils that has no heart but to hurt people intentionally.
