NYC Hidden Harbor Tour — Forgotten Harbor, Found in Art

hiddenharborartA sure sign that Spring has finally arrived in New York harbor is the return of the Working Harbor Committee‘s Hidden Harbor Tours. The first, scheduled for May 1st, is Forgotten Harbor, Found in Art.  Here is the description of the two-hour tour:

Join the Working Harbor Committee on a unique Hidden Harbor® Tour of the history of NYC maritime art in our working waterfronts. The tour will take us to places in the harbor where famous scenes of historical art have been captured in public art you can visit in NYC!

See how New York Harbor has inspired artists throughout history. Learn about the famous Marine Grill terracotta murals of the McAlpin Hotel and the hidden trompe l’oeil mural of the Brooklyn Bridge and its neighboring bridges; the Manhattan and Williamsburg at the South Street Seaport. This new Hidden Harbor Tour© transports you back in time through art!

The 2-hour, fully narrated tour on a Circle Line Sightseeing boat, departs at 2:00PM sharp. Boarding begins at 1:30PM from Pier 83 in Manhattan located on West 42nd Street and 12th Avenue (Hudson River). Snack bar on board.

Special guest speakers: WHC Board members Gordon Cooper, HHH Maritime Consulting, and Bonnie Harken, AIA, Nautilus International Development Consulting, Inc., and WHC Steering Committee member Margaret Stocker, Maritime Historian. All passengers will receive a hand-out that will list the collection of maritime artwork we will be discussing and where to find these works of art in NYC.
